Reproduction Flashcards
What is asexual reproduction?
Reproduction involving one parent with genetically identical offspring
What is a runner?
An offshoot of a plant on which plantlets are produced by asexual reproduction
What are the advantages of asexual reproduction?
- Only one parent is needed
- It is a more time and energy efficient process as finding a mate is not required
- Many identical offspring can be produced when conditions are favourable
What is genetic variation?
Inherited differences in organisms
What is natural selection?
The process by which organisms that are better adapted are more likely to survive and reproduce, which was first described by Darwin
What is selective breeding?
A process by which humans have chosen organisms to breed together to develop desirable characteristics
What is meiosis?
Cell division which forms non-identical, haploid gametes
What are the advantages of sexual reproduction?
- The production of genetic variation in offspring
- If the environment changes, this variation gives a survival advantage by natural selection
