Ecology 1 Flashcards
What is a population?
The total number of all organisms of the same species in a geographical area
What is a community?
A group of two or more populations of different species in the same geographical area
What is an ecosystem?
The interaction between a community of living organisms and the non-living parts of their environment
What is interdependence?
All organisms within a community depend upon each other
What are examples of abiotic factors?
Light intensity
temperature
moisture levels
soil
Ph and mineral content
wind intensity
What are examples of biotic factors?
availability of food
new predators
new pathogens
What are the steps of the carbon cycle?
- Carbon enters the atmosphere as carbon dioxide from respiration and combustion.
- Carbon dioxide is absorbed by producers to make carbohydrates in photosynthesis.
- Animals feed on plants, passing the carbon compounds along the food chain. Most carbon they consume is exhaled as carbon dioxide during respiration. The animals and plants eventually die.
4.Dead organisms are eaten by decomposers and carbon in their bodies is returned to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide
What are the steps of the water cycle?
- Evaporation
- Condensation
- Precipitation
- Infiltration
- Transpiration
What is decomposistion?
The decay of waste materials
What is biodiversity?
The variety of all the different species of organisms on Earth or within an ecosystem
What is global warming is caused by?
greenhouse effect
How is biodiversity maintained?
Breeding programmes, protection of rare habitats and the reduction of deforestation
What is food security?
Having enough food to feed a population
