Hormones in human reproduction Flashcards
What is testosterone?
A male sex hormone produced in the testes that controls puberty
What is oestrogen?
A female sex hormone produced in the ovaries that controls puberty and prepares the uterus for pregnancy
How long does the menstrual cycle last?
28 days
What is progesterone?
A female sex hormone produced in the corpus luteum that prepares the uterus for pregnancy
What is Menopause?
The point in a womans life usually between 45 and 55, when she stops menstruating after which she cannot become pregnant
What is FSH?
A hormone produced by the pituitary glands that cause an ovum to mature in an ovary and stimulate the ovary to produce oestrogen
What is oestrogen?
- Released by ovaries
- Targets the uterus
- Causes lining to thicken in first half of the cycle
- High oestrogen concentration switches off the release of FSH and switches on the release of LH
What is LH?
- Released by pituitary gland
- Targets the ovary
- Stimulates ovulation
What is progesterone?
- Released by the ovaries
- Targets the uterus
- Maintains a thick uterus lining if fertilized ovum implants
- High concentration of progesterone in pregnancy stop the cycle
