Inheritance, Variation and Evolution 2 Flashcards
What are the complementary base pairs?
A-T
T-A
G-C
C-G
What is a genome?
All of our genetic material
What is protein synthesis?
The manufacture of protein which has two parts
What is an allele?
Pairs of genes, one inherited from each parent. The alleles present are an organisms phenotype
What is evolution?
A change in the inherited characteristics of a population over time through the process of natural selection which may result in the formation of new species
What is selective breeding?
When humans select individual plants and animals to breed for their particular genetic characteristics
This is repeated throughout generations
It can lead to interbreeding
What is genetic engineering?
The process of modifying the genome of an organism by the intorduction of a gene from another organism to give a desired characteristic
How does genetic engineering work?
Enzymes are used to isolate and cut out the required gene
THis is then inserted innto a bacterial plasmid of a virus
THis is then insterted into an animal
What are fossils?
Remains of organisms from millions of years ago
