REPRODUCTION Flashcards
What is sexual reproduction?
fusion of male + female gametes during fertilisation to produce non-identical offspring that inherit characteristics from both parents
What is asexual reproduction?
doesnt involve sex cells or fertilisation
only one parent is required so theres no fusion o0f gametes + no mixing of genetic information.
As a result, offspring are genetically identical to parent + each other (clones)
How do gametes differ from a normal cell?
Gametes contain half the number of chromosomes found in other body cells
Why do Gametes only contain half the number of chromosomes found in other body cells?
They only contain ONE COPY OF EACH CHROMOSOME
rather than 2 like body cells
How many chromosomes does a normal body cell in a human being have?
46 CHROMOSOMES
each gamete contains 23
What is a zygote?
When male + female gamete fuse they become a zygote (FERTILISED EGG CELL)
-zygote contains full 46 chromosomes (half from mother + half from father)
How does a zygote develop into an embryo?
Zygote undergoes cell division + after few days forms an EMBRYO.
Cell division continues + eventually many of new cells produced become specialised to perform particular functions + form all body tissues of offspring.
How many chromosomes does an embryo contain?
46
