Biological consequences of smoking Flashcards
What can smoking cause?
lung disease, heart disease + increased risks of several different types of canccer
What chemicals do cigaretts include?
tar
nicotine
carbon monoxide
How can smoking affect air pasages?
tar destroys cilia, causing buildup of mucus + leading to bronchitis
What are the effects of smoking on alveoli?
tar breaks wall of alveoli (causing them to merge together)
-thus creates insufficient SA:V - allowing less gas exchange.
Reduces efficiency of gas exchange, causing emphysema (less O2 carried in blood) - exercise is difficult
How can smoking cause lung cancer?
tobaco smoke contains carcinogens such as tar
smiking increases risk of lung cancer
What are the effects of smoking on circulatory system?
nicotine narrows blood vessels so will increase blood pressure
-narrow blood vessels are likely to become clagged with fat (like colesterol)
If this happens in coronary artery, it causes coronary disease.
Heart muscles dont gent sufficient O2 so less aerobic respiration takes place
