GERMINATION Flashcards
What are the main parts a seed has?
EMBRYO
FOOD STORE
SSEED COAT (TESTA)
What is an embryo in a seed?
young root + shoot that will become an adult plant
Why do seeds have a food store?
contains starch for seedling to use until its able to carry out photosynthesis
What is the testa?
seed coat -> tough protective outer covering
How do seeds utilise food reserves until they are able to carry out photosynthesis?
Glucose used in aerobic respiration to release energy for growth
This continues until seed germinates + can start to photosynthesise independently
What is germination?
start of growth of a seed
What are the factors required for succesful germination?
WATER
OXYGEN
WARMTH
Why is water required for succesful germination?
allows seed to swell up + enzymes in embryo to start working so growth can occur
Why is oxygen required for succesful germination?
so energy can be released for germination
Why is warmth required for succesful germination?
GERMINATION IMPROVES AS TEMPERATURE RISES
