Representing Data Flashcards
Mastery
Frequency Distributions
Pereto distribution
Quartiles
jump height, weight, VO2
rich and poor Americans, research produced, writers writing books
- used to describe a score’s position within a distribution divided into four equal parts (quarters) based off the median
Anscombe’s quartet was devised too…
we need to look at numbers, but visually plot out data, and graphics can tell you lots that the numbers cant
Bar Graph/Chart
* Visual representation of the quantity of some measure across one or more categorical variables using bars
Data is grouped in to… container
y axis
x axis
Bar Graph/Chart
* Visual representation of the quantity of some measure across one or more categorical variables using bars
Data is grouped in to nominal or ordinal container
y axis IV
x axis DV
Pie Graph/Chart
* Shows the … of categorical data using a proportional pie image.
Data can be either … or … data, where the full circle represents all possible outcomes or occurrences.(Therefore a percentage of all total outcomes)
Pie Graph/Chart
* Shows the relative size or proportion of categorical data using a proportional pie image.
Data can be either quantity or frequency data, where the full circle represents all possible outcomes or occurrences. (Therefore a percentage of all total outcomes)
3D graphs – things you don’t do!
* The third dimension is expected to represent data in a 3D graph, chart, etc.
* If you are using a 3D chart because it is “cool” beware you may lose marks!
- Histogram
- A graphical representation of the … of data
- Using bars to represent … distribution
- Line Graph
- A graphical representation of the … of data
- Using lines to represent … distribution
- Histogram
- A graphical representation of the distribution of data
- Using bars to represent frequency distribution
- Line Graph
- A graphical representation of the distribution of data
- Using lines to represent frequency distribution
how do we feel based on the differences in how they are represented

Purpose of the rose diagrams - THEIR PURPOSE?
- Deaths from expectable causes, injury, heart attack, accidents…
- Deaths from war injuries
- Preventable deaths, infection, disease, sanitation, drinking water. WINTER MONTHS
Labelled as Zymotic on the rose diagram:
1. Air or water borne (miasma)
2. Contact / inoculation
3. Diet
4. Parasitic
- Raise awareness that most people “in the war” did not die from injury but instead infection and preventable disease!
- Make this message very emotionally and powerfully!

Rose is more dramatic? pulls on heartstrings more?
Scatterplot
* Paired data set
* Relationship between two … Variables
RUNNERS? 5000m and 100m when switch events?
Time Series Graph/Chart
…
Correlation is not …!
eg.
Scatterplot
* Paired data set
* Relationship between two Ordinal or Interval/Ratio Variables
Time Series Graph/Chart
change over period of time
Correlation is not causation!
other lifestyle choices someone makes that isn’t included in study. vegetarians are more health focused
