Renal Tubular Acidosis Flashcards
What is renal tubular acidosis?
Metabolic acidosis due to tubule pathology
How many types of renal tubular acidosis are there?
4
What is type 1 renal tubular acidosis?
Distal tubule pathology -> unable to secrete H+ ions
What causes type 1 renal tubular acidosis?
Genetic SLE Sjogrens PBC Hyperthyroidism Sickle cell anaemia
What are features of type 1 renal tubular acidosis?
Failure to thrive Hyperventilation occur CKD Low potassium High urine pH
Why does hyperventilation occur in type 1 renal tubular acidosis?
To compensate for metabolic acidosis
How is type 1 renal tubular acidosis managed?
Oral bicarbonate
What is type 2 renal tubular acidosis?
Proximal tubule pathology -> unable to reabsorb bicarbonate
How is type 2 renal tubular acidosis managed?
Oral bicarbonate
What is type 3 renal tubular acidosis?
Combination of type 1 & 2
What is type 4 renal tubular acidosis?
Reduced aldosterone
What can cause type 4 renal tubular acidosis?
Adrenal insufficiency ACEi Spironolactone SLE HIV
What are features of type 4 renal tubular acidosis?
Raised potassium
Raised chloride
Low urine pH
How is type 4 renal tubular acidosis managed?
Fludrocortisone
