Renal Transplant Flashcards
How many years does transplant add to your life?
10 years
What is involved in donor matching?
Matches based on the human leukocyte antigen (HLA)
The less they match the more likely the transplant is to fail
What is involved in the procedure?
Native kidneys are left in place
Donor kidney’s blood vessels are anastomosed with the patient’s pelvic vessels, usually the external iliac vessels
Donor kidney ureter is anastomosed directly with the patient’s bladder
Donor kidney can be palpated in the iliac fossa area
What is required after transplant?
Life long immunosuppression
What are some immunosuppressive agents?
Corticosteroids- prednisolone
Calcineurin inhibitors- tacrolimus
Anti proliferative- mycophenolate mofetil
Depleting agents- basiliximab
What is the protocol for immunosuppression?
Induction- basiliximab
Maintenance- tacrolimus + mycophenolate mofetil _ prednisolone
What are complications of kidney transplant?
Transplant rejection
Transplant failure
Electrolyte imbalances
Infection
Malignancy
Surgical complications
What are the types of rejection?
Acute
- T cell mediated
- Antibody mediated
Chronic
- Antibody mediated
