Q

What is peritoneal dialysis?

A

Uses the peritoneal membrane as the filtration membrane
Special dialysis solution containing dextrose is added to the peritoneal cavity
Ultrafiltration occurs across the peritoneal membrane into the dialysis solution
Dialysis solution is then replaced

Q

What is AV- fistula?

A

Artificial connection between an artery and a vein
- Permanent, large, easy access blood vessel with high pressure arterial blood dlow
- Requires surgical operation and maturation period

Q

What is STEAL syndrome?

A

Inadequate blood flow to the limb distal to the fistula
- Fistula steals blood from the distal limb
- Causes distal ischaemia
