Renal system Flashcards

1
Q

Q

Where is the kidney located ?

A

Kidneys lie to the back of the abdominal cavity, protected by the spine + lower ribcage

Q

What does the renal artery do ?

A

contains capillary that supplies blood to nephrons

Q

How is blood volume maintained ?

A

If all filtrate from Bowman’s capsule were lost, the body would go into circulatory shock
Therefore there is also reabsorption from tubular fluid into blood

Q

What are the ultrafiltration stages in the renal capsule?

A

Filtered through 3 layers:
Endothelial lining of glomerular blood vessels
Basement membrane – main barrier
Renal capsule cells

Q

The function of proximal convoluted tubule ?

A

Most filtrate formed in the renal capsule reabsorbed from the PCT into capillaries sodium ions

Q

The function of loop of henle?

A

Long U shaped section descends deep into medulla

As fluid travels up the ascending limb, Na+ Cl- is actively transported into the surrounding area
Causes water to pass out of the descending limb by osmosis

Small amounts urea,Na+and other ions are also reabsorbed.

16
Q

The function of a Distal convoluted tubule?

A

DCT fine tunes the remaining fluid in response to the immediate needs of the body

Has important role in regulation of pH, salt and water balance

Na+ ions are actively pumped out, Cl- follows passively

17
Q

What is the function of collecting duct ?

A

Urine enters the CD – travels through themedullato thepelvis.
Urine becomes moreconcentratedwhich causes water to move out by osmosis

18
Q

What is urea ?

A

nitrogenous waste from the liver by deamination/breakdown of amino acids by dissolving waste products in the bloodstream.
