Introduction to physiology Flashcards
What is extracellular fluid ?
Fluids outside the cells such as :
blood plasma and lymph
Interstitial tissue fluid
Which are both separated
What is intracellular fluid ?
Intracellular fluid: cytoplasm/cytosol that surrounds all cells not in the blood.
ICF lower pH than ECF
What is active transport ?
Molecules move against their concentration gradient using ATP hydrolysis, Pumps 3 Na+ from ICF to ECF and 2 K+ in reverse, establishing potential difference
What is homeostasis?
The ability of the body to maintain a constant internal environment
What does homeostasis regulate ?
Core temperature
Energy levels ATP
Plasma levels of oxygen, potassium, and calcium
The function of the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system transports lymph (fluid) using lymph nodes.
The system is key for immunity, blood pressure regulation
What is physiology ?
the normal functioning of living organisms
