Explain the role of Vesalius. (3)
A
- Belgian anatomist who in 1543: Wrote “Fabric of the Human Body” which contained accurate anatomical drawing of the human body from illegal dissections
- Corrected 200+ of Galen’s mistakes
- Observations allowed new treatments to be developed that would have a scientific basis

Explain the role of Ambroise Pare. (5)
A
- French surgeon who in 1575: Wrote “Works on Surgery” - advanced treatment of wounds, amputations and fractures
- Was a barber surgeon who by chance used an ointment made of egg yolk, rose oil and turpentine and found that patients recovered better with it.
- Developed silk ligatures to replace cauterization - weren’t sterilized so some patients died of infection.
- Designed prosthetic limbs for amputees
- Invented surgical tools e.g. the Crow’s Beak to clamp blood vessels - this is till used today

Who is William Harvey? (4)
A
- English doctor who in 1628: Wrote “Du Motu Cordis” which proved that the heart pumped blood in one direction
- Disproved Galen’s idea that the liver produced blood that was burned up by the heart.
- Dissected human bodies and drew detailed anatomical drawings
- B/c of ppl like Jean Riolan the Younger, who was a leading supporter of Galen and one of Harvey’s greatest opposers, it was decades after his death before any of his ideas were wholly accepted.

What do Vesalius, Pare and Harvey have in common? (2)
A
- All used the printing press to release books based on scientific observation and experimentation
- People still followed old ideas b/c King Charles II was being treated for imbalanced humours.
