- WW1: Mental strain of war lead to psychological damage known as shell shock - British army refused to believe it existed until there were so many cases.
- Doctors began to address mental health as an official illness

- 1900: Blood groups were dicovered - doctors could now match the donor and receiver’s blood groups
- Beginning of WW1: ways of transporting and preserving blood were developed - patients could now experience large blood loss and have it replaced
- WW2: USA and Britain opened large blood banks

- 1895: X-rays were discovered - doctors could see into the body without cutting it
- WW1: Portable X-ray technology were used on front lines to find bullets and shrapnel in soldiers
- Led to the development of further scanning techniques e.g. ultrasound, MRI, PET
