What is the significance of Hippocrates? (2)

  1. Important at the time - Four Humours was used by Medieval doctors, and the promotion of a moderate diet and exercise ensured the longevity of the Ancient Greeks.

  1. Ancient Roman doctor
  2. Developed theory of Four Humours further and created the treatment of opposites
  3. Experimented on animals (e.g monkeys) b/c human dissection was forbidden - made mistakes about human anatomy b/c of this e.g thought humans had two jawbones

What is the significance of Galen? (3)

A
  1. Important at the time - Treatment of opposites was used by Medieval doctors
  2. Relevant - shows the importance of human dissection and a deep understanding of human anatomy
  3. Time - methods were practiced for over 1000 years b/c of the Catholic Church’s support. Galen also believed in one God so the Church accepted his ideas at a time where they had lots of influence over medicine.
