- 13th century monk Roger Bacon was arrested for suggesting doctors should do their own original research.
- Medicine was well-regarded but second to religion

- Catholic Church founded 700+ hospitals
- Specialist hospitals called lazar houses were made for lepers - these were stationed on the outskirts of town. Bedlam Hospital was made to focus on mental health.
- Care not Cure - sickness = divine punishment so curing it was wrong but following the example of Jesus (who healed the sick) made them prioritize caring over curing.
- Only priests and nuns were allowed to work in hospitals founded by the Church.

- Prophet Muhammad, “For every disease Allah has given a cure” - research to find cures was encouraged
- Baghdad became a centre for learning. The library was called the “House of Wisdom”

- Canon of Medicine became the standard medical book in Europe until the 17th Century.

- Islamic hospitals were called bimaristans and focused on curing all patients.
- Doctors were permanently present in hospitals and medical students trained beside them
- People with mental health problems were treated with compassion as victims of an unfortunate illness.
