What was happening during the Renaissance?
Interest in art and literature were being reborn
A change in the way people viewed themselves as individuals and the world around them.
Ancient roman and Greek artifacts, buildings, and writings became very important.
Where did the Renaissance begin?
Italy.
Why did the Renaissance start in Italy? 2 reasons.
1) Location on the Mediterranean Sea allowed Italians to trade and meet strangers from other lands and far away places.
2) Each city in Italy specialized in a certain craft.

What does Renaissance mean?
A period of rebirth.
What allowed Italians to trade more?
Each area specialized in a different craft.
What is humanism?
A way of thinking and learning that stresses the importance of human ability and actions.
What are the three parts of humanism?
Anatomy-study of the human body.
Expression of emotion- writing, paintings, plays, and music.
Scientific exploration.
What does it mean to be a Renaissance man or woman?
Someone who does almost everything well.
What is individualism?
the accomplishments of an individual.
What does secularism mean?
not of God.
During the Renaissance, was clergy still corrupt?
Yes, they were more concerned about their own wealth and power than their spiritual position.
What were the two ways the church gained wealth?
1) Sales of indulgences
2) Land left to the church in wills or during someone’s lifetime.
People were charged money if they wanted what four things?
1) To spend less time in Purgatory
2) To get directly into Heaven
3) For forgiveness
4) For already dead loved ones.
Who was Martin Luther?
A priest who questioned the authority of the church.
What was the name of the Catholic Priest who did not like the sal of Indulgences?
Martin Luther.
