What is the duties of the pope?
To choose the policies, laws and teachings of the church, explains laws or policies, guides and teaches people how to be good and how to pray, and excommunicates.
Define excommunicate.
To be kicked out of church after working or going against the church.
How can you be excommunicated?
By going against the word of the church or purposely doing something bad to the church or the officials.
Who cannot communicate?
Anyone but the pope.
How does everybody in Europe being Catholic create a problem?
It opens the door for the church to manipulate them.
How do you popes live like royalty?
People look to the pope for a political leader. The church is acted like kings. Popes lived in huge palaces. Owned a big piece of land called the Holy Roman Empire. Had so much land they had to use feudalism.
How do you popes being like kings create a problem?
People try to control kings and popes are acting like kings instead of spiritual representatives.
Who are Friars?
People who belong to religious orders, but lived in work among the general public
How did Friars live?
They own no property, owned plain robes and no shoes, and roamed about and preached for food.
Who is a famous friar?
Saint Francis of Asissi.
Describe the great schism of 1054.
Cochlear the ninth believe that the pope should have more power but the Bishop of Eastern Europe disagreed and believe that they did not need the pope’s authority. The Bishop of Constantinople was then excommunicated causing the great schism which resulted in the church splitting into two.
Who is the Pope?
The head of the church and is believed to be the closest person to God on earth.
