Reliability and validity Flashcards
What is validity?
How accurate the results of an experiment are
(does it measure what it’s meant to)
What is reliability?
The consistency of the measuring device
(is it replicable?)
What 2 ways can you assess reliability?
-Test-retest
-Interobserver reliability
What is inter-observer reliability?
Used to assess the degree to which different raters/observers give consistent estimates
What 4 ways can psychologists improve reliability and validity?
-Standard instructions
(giving all ppt same instructions)
-Carefully controlled procedures
(do experiments same each time)
-Reducing confounding and extraneous variables
-Using a non-biased sample
What is test-retest reliability?
To take the test twice and see if the results correlate
What is internal validity?
Does the study accurately measure what it intends to and how the IV affects the DV
What is external validity?
Can generalize the results to real life situations
What is ecological validity?
Can the results be generalized to other situations/places
What is temporal validity?
Can the results be generalized to other times in history
What is population validity?
Can the results be generalized to other people
