Non experimental- Types of data Flashcards
What is qualitative data?
data that focuses on in depth anlysis of opinions or views
what 3 methods lead to produce qualitative data?
open question interviews
case studies
some observations
What is the strength and a limitation of qualitative data?
A- useful where deep understanding is required to get views or feelings
D- Often based on subjective accounts and open to distortion
What is quantitative data?
Any findings that can be expressed in numerical form. It can be marked, ranked and counted
What 2 methods lead to produce quantitative data?
Experiments
Closed questionnaires
What is a strength and limitation of quantitative data?
A-They’re more objective (less open to interpretation)
D-They may provide statistics but they have little real meaning so we can potentially lose the human
What is primary data?
data collected for the purpose of the investigation by the researcher. It arrives firsthand from the ppt themself
What 3 methods produce primary data?
-Experiments
-Questionnaires
-Interviews
What is a strength and a limitation of primary data?
A- It is fit for purpose as its targeted to get the exact information needed
D-Time time-consuming and expensive
What is secondary data?
Data thats already been collected by another researcher. Its pre existing and used for a secondary purpose
What methods produce secondary data?
-Research conducted by other psychologists
-Government records
-Info on websites
What is a strength and limitation of secondary data?
A- Already statically tested so we already know the significance level
D- There may be variation in quality as you cannot quality control
What is meta analysis?
The process of combining the data from a large number of studies that have already been carried out in a particular area of study to see if the results are consistent
What sort of data can meta anaylsis include?
Its a type of secondary data
But it can include both quantitative and qualitative data
What is a strength and limitation of using meta analysis?
A- It increases confidence in the findings and we can generalise them to a larger audience
D-Theyre prone to publisher bias and file drawer effect as the researcher may not select all relevant studies
