Experiment types Flashcards
What are the 4 types of experiment types?
- Lab
- Field
- Natural
- Quasi
What is a lab experiment?
In a controlled environment
What is a field experiment?
In an everyday situation, participants are unaware they’re in a study
What is a natural experiment?
Occurs naturally, the experimenter notices and records
What is a quasi-experiment?
Based on existing differences between people
(iv is the person)
What is high/low external validity?
How much the measure applies to real life
What is high/low internal validity?
How accurate the measure is
What are the 3 strengths of lab experiments?
- High internal validity
- Replicable
- High control for extraneous variables
What are the 3 limitations of a lab experiment?
- Lack of generalisability
- Low external validity
- Demand characteristics
What are the 2 strengths of Field experiments?
- High external validity
- Low demand characteristics
What are the 3 limitations of Field experiments?
- Lack of control for extraneous variables
- Hard to replicate
- Ethical problems
What are the 2 strengths of Natural experiments?
- Ethical
- High external validity
What are the 2 limitations of Natural experiments?
- Hard to replicate
- Hard to see if IV affected DV
What are the strengths and limitations of quasi-experiments?
Can be any but often lab if so:
1. high internal validity
2. extraneous variables may affect outcome
