Public Health
profession with significant ties to urban planning. Planning plays a role in public health topics such as surface and drinking water quality, air quality, obesity and inactivity, crime, pedestrian safety, hazardous waste sites and transported materials and mental health
Five Strategic Points of Intervention between planning and public health
- visioning and goal setting (PH practitioners should have a seat at the table, and could use visioning sessions to educate the public about development and public health)
- plans and planning (planners should provide a narrative description of the rationale for addressing health, physical activity an accessibility for all people in the comprehensive plan)
- Implementation Tools: the reform of zoning and subdivision regulations can promote public health through walkability and transit use, for example
- Site Design and Development (E.g. promoting pedestrian friendly environments)
- Public Facility Siting and Capital Spending (e.g. enhancing walkability around public facilities such as schools.)

Universal Design
Another area of overlap between planning and public health. Defined as the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. Planners land use decisions can have a positive effect on universal design by promoting easier access for everyone. This translates to providing more opportunities for multi-modal travel, including wheelchairs, walking, bicycle, or mass transit.
Health Impact Assessment
Another collaborative area between public health and planning. More common in Europe and Australia but gaining popularity in the US. The WHO defines HIA as a combination of procedures, methods, and tools by which a policy, program or project may be judged in terms of its potential effects within the population. Can be used to analyze a policy or set of policies, such as a comp plan, rezoning, brownfield development.
