Reflexes Flashcards
What are the 5 places on the body to test for tendon reflex?
- AC fossa for bicep reflex
- back of elbow for tricep reflex
- radius for brachioradialis reflex
- knee for quadriceps/patellar reflex
- above the heel for the Achilles (ankle) reflex
A normal deep tendon reflex in graded as what?
2
Hypoactive or absent reflexes
hyporeflexia
Hyperactive reflexes
hyperreflexia
A depressed or sluggish reflex
1
Remote muscle contraction that enhances the reflexes in a normal patient in known as
Reinforcement
A type of neurological condition that creates involuntary muscle contractions- this results in uncontrollable, rhythmic, shaking movements
Clonus
What does clonus indicate?
CNS disease - ALS, brain injury, cerebral palsy, MS, serotonin toxicity, spinal cord injury
What components must be intact for a reflex to occur?
- sensory nerve fibers
- spinal cord synapse
- motor nerve fibers
- neuromuscular junction
- muscle fibers
Using the Scale for Grading Reflexes, if a patient has a brisker than average reflex, you would grade it as:
3
Using the Scale for Grading Reflexes, if a patient has an absent reflex, you would grade it as:
0
Using the Scale for Grading Reflexes, if a patient has a very brisk, hyperactive reflex with clonus, you would grade it as:
4
clonus must be present to be graded a 4
