Reflexes Flashcards
What happens when the tendons are tapped in the stretch reflex?
Transfer force onto muscle fibres which stretch and stimulate the spindles
What neurones are activated in the stretch reflex?
Alpha motoneurones
What do alpha motoneurones cause?
The agonist muscle to contract
What kind of reflex is the stretch reflex?
A monosynaptic reflex
What happens when a muscle contracts in a golgi tendon organ reflex?
Golgi tendon bodies increase their discharge
Inhibits agonist muscle
Activates Antagonist muscle
Relaxes
Why does the golgi tendon organ reflex relax the muscle?
To prevent over contraction and to prevent tendon tearing
What receptors does a flexor-withdrawal reflex use?
Receptors in skin, muscle and joints
What does a flexor-withdrawal reflex do?
Withdraws the affected part of the body away from a stimulus
