Carbohydrates Flashcards
What are the 3 main dietary Monosaccharides
Glucose
Galactose
Fructose
What are the 3 main dietary Disaccharides
Maltose
Sucrose
Lactose
Where is Glucokinase found?
The Liver
What are the Km and Vmax for Glucokinase like?
Both high so it will only pick up Glucose when concentration is high
Why does Glucokinase have a high Km and Vmax?
So as much glucose is trapped in the liver as possible
What are the Km and Vmax for Hexokinase like?
Both low so that it can bind to Glucose even when concentrations are low
Describe the structure of Glycogen
Polymer of Glucose, alpha 1-4 glycosidic bonds with alpha 1-6 branches
What is the first stage in Glycogen synthesis?
Glucogenin binds glucose from UDP-glucose to form chains
What is the second stage in Glycogen synthesis?
Glycogen synthase extends the chains
What is the final stage in Glycogen synthesis?
The chains are branched
What are glucose subunits removed as from the ends of branches of glycogen?
Glucose-1-Phosphate
What kind of Phosphorylation is Glycolysis?
Substrate level Phosphorylation
What electron carrier does Glycolysis use?
NAD+
Describe the main stages of Glycolysis
Glucose-Glucose6Phosphate-Fructose1,6Biphosphate-G3P-PEP-Pyruvate
What is generated during Glycolysis?
2 ATP and 2 Pyruvate
