Referendums and representative democracy Flashcards
How are representatives going to approach a problem differently vis a vis the population as a whole?
They are more likely to adopt a rational approach and resist emotional responses to questions
Why can elected representatives be seen as in a better position to make political decisions than the electorate?
They have access to experts to help them make decisions. They can ensure the information upon which they base their decisions is accurate. Whereas most other people rely on the media for their information, which is at best conflicting and at worst dubious
How can elected representatives help prevent a tyranny of the majority?
Elected representatives most factor in the interests of both majorities and minorities, while voters usually only think of their own interests
What is the arguement in favour of leaving political decision making up to professional politicians?
In theory, MPs should be in a better position to make a reasoned judgement than ordinary people with less knowledge and understanding of the complex political issue. Judgement and good sense are qualities we consider when electing them
