what is the recruitment process? (7 steps)
identify vacancy —> write person specification and job description —> advertise job —> process applications —> shortlist most suitable candidates —> interview most suitable candidates —> appoint most suitable candidate
what is a job description?
its main purpose is to list all of the duties that are required in the role. it may include the job title, rate of pay or salary, hours of work, location of work, all duties included in the role and whom the employee would report to in the business
what is a person specification?
a description of the qualifications, skills, experience, knowledge and other attributes (selection criteria) which a candidate must possess to perform the job duties
what do these 2 documents help with?
they ensure the right person is recruited for the job
internal recruitment advantages
- candidates already know the business and the business knows the candidates
- saves time and saves money
- employee can start straight away
internal recruitment disadvantages
- leaves a vacancy in another department
- preventing opportunities for new skills to enter
- preventing opportunities for new ideas
- employee might not be good at the new role
- can cause resentment among colleagues who aren’t selected
external recruitment advantages
- brings in new ideas
- brings in new skills
- a wider pool of staff to choose from
- can be really particular as more choice
external recruitment disadvantages
- long and expensive process
- candidates will need a longer induction process
- not guaranteed to find suitable candidate
- have only seen a candidate at recruitment - might not be representative of what they’re like at work

what are aptitude tests?
a way for employers to assess a candidate’s abilities through a variety of different testing formats.
they will test your ability to perform tasks and react to situations at work
what are psychometric tests?
is used to assess a candidate’s cognitive ability and their personality. from a candidate’s response, psychometric testing can predict valuable insights such as job performance, competence and motivations.
