Radical Republicans
After the Civil War, a group that believed the South should be harshly punished and thought that Lincoln was sometimes too compassionate towards the South.
Sharecropping system
This replaced the plantation system as the primary method of agricultural production in the south. The system consisted of plantations subdivided into small farms there were rented to freedmen for leases paid in the form of a share (usually half) of the crop produced.
Freedmen very rarely profited from this
Black Codes and Jim Crow Laws
Laws denying most legal rights to newly freed slaves; passed by southern states following the Civil War
Limited rights of blacks. Literacy tests, grandfather clauses and poll taxes limited black voting rights
Booker T. Washington
founded a vocational training institution in the late 1800s to improve economic opportunities for African Americans
Compromise of 1877
Ended Reconstruction. Republicans promise to remove military from South

Klu Klux Klan (KKK)
A secret organization that used terrorist tactics in an attempt to restore white supremacy in the South after the Civil War.

Believed that education advancement was the key to success
