Reason why the U.S. DOES NOT limit immigration during the 19th century
immigrants provide a source of cheap labor
Old Immigrants
immigrants who had come to the US before the 1880s from Britain, Germany, Ireland, and Scandinavia, or Northern Europe. Easier time adjusting to American life
New Immigrants
Immigrants who came to the United States during and after the 1880s; most were from southern and eastern Europe. Harder time adjusting to the American way of life.
Nativism
An anti-foreign feeling that arose in the 1840’s and 1850’s in response to the increase of Irish and German immigrants
Chinese Exclusion Act (1882)
Denied any additional Chinese laborers to enter the country.
Assimilation
Adopting the traits of another culture. Often happens over time when someone immigrates to a new country
Goal of the Dawes Act of 1887 regarding Native American Indians
Assimilating Native American Indians into mainstream American life
