What are the five steps to mastering a reading passage?
- -Topic
- -Keywords
- -Map the Scope of each paragraph

What should you do to be an excellent critical reader?
DONT READ EVERY WORD
- -Read the passage FIRST
- -Use keywords to guide what you pick up on
- -Take VERY SHORT-HAND notes
If a passage describes a claim, or makes a statement and then says, “for example” what should you do?
Don’t read the example yet, but jot down that there is an example relating to something previously stated
What are the six types of keywords?
Continuation Sequence Evidence Contrast Emphasis Conclusion
If you know that an answer is absolutely correct what should you not do?
Do not look at the other answers, because they could trip you up. The questions are designed to do this, so don’t allow it
If you feel fairly good about an answer, but aren’t absolutely sure, what should you do?
Use your road map FIRST
- -If that doesn’t narrow it down to one answer, pick your favorite, and mark it to come back
- -If you’re out of time pick an answer and move on
What is the tone for most passages?

What if you don’t know what to map?
Write down what makes one paragraph different from another
What to do if you are running out of time?
ONLY read the FIRST and LAST sentences, and get to the questions

What are the two most important things you must do during Reading Comp?
- -Create a VERY BRIEF paragraph map
- -GET TO THE QUESTIONS (only spend 7-8 mins on reading the whole passage)
Why should I not read all the details?
Your brain will try to remember what you read, and you may not go back to read
–Use your map, go back and detail read in a paragraph ONLY if a specific question is asked
