Reactions Flashcards
What does rate of reaction equal?
Amount of reaction used or amount of product form divided by time
How do you measure the rate of reaction?
Measuring the disappearance of reactants call appearance of products
How do you measure precipitation reactions?
You see how long it is for a marker to be no longer seen
How could you measure the amount of gas given off?
Measuring change in mass or volume of gas given off
How do you measure the volume of gas given off?
Using a gas syringe over a field reaction this will move the syringe outwards and give you a volume
What is the collision theory?
The rate of reaction depends on how often and how hard particles collide with each other
Name for ways to increase the rate of reaction
Higher temperature
Higher concentration
larger surface area
Catalysts
How does a higher temperature increase the rate of reaction?
Particles all move quicker
when they move quicker they going to collide more often
How does higher concentration increase the rate of reaction?
Because when they are closer together they are more likely to make collisions
How does a larger surface area increases collisions?
They will have more of an area to work on so there will be more frequent collisions.
What is the activation energy?
The minimum out of energy needed for a reaction to occur.
Define catalyst.
A catalyst is a substance which speeds up a reaction, without being changed or used up in the reaction.
What are the disadvantages of using catalysts?
You may have to buy multiple ones
They can be expensive
They can be poisoned by impurities and stop working
What is exothermic reaction?
One that transfers energy to the surroundings
What is a endothermic reaction?
One which takes in energy from the surroundings.
