Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What charge does a metal ion have?
Positive
What types of elements does this bonding occur in?
Metals and Non metals
What charge does a non metal ion have?
Negative
Why do ionic molecules often gather?
Because the positive ions are attracted to negative ones.
Electrostatic attraction.
What group is Group One reactive with?
Group 7, because they all want a full outer shell.
What is a charge particle?
An ion.
What sort of structure does an ionic compound have?
It has an ionic lattice. It makes it closely packed.
What forces hold ionic compounds together?
It is held together by electrostatic forces.
What is the melting point of ionic compounds like?
High.
Why are the boiling and melting points high in ionic compounds?
This is because the electrostatic attraction is very strong. It takes a lot of energy to break this apart.
When are ionic compounds good conductors and why?
They’re free to move around when they’re melted and therefore can carry charge. This works in solution as we’ll.
Why do they conduct electric current when in solution or melted?
Because the electrons are free to move and can carry the charge.
What groups are most likely to form ionic bonds?
1 and 2.
6 and 7.
What is the overall charge of a compound?
Zero
What features are needed in the diagram of an ionic compound?
The electronic structure with brackets around it and showing what charge it is outside the bracket b
