New Materials And Polymers Flashcards
Give a use for shape memory alloys
Glasses or braces
What is nitinol know as?
Shape memory alloys
How do shape memory alloys work?
At a cool temperature it can be twisted and bent. At a high temperature it will bend back to the original shape.
What are nano particles?
Really small particles only about 1-100 metres across
What is a fullerene?
A carbon nano particle.
What are fullerenes shaped like?
Hollow balls or closed tubes
What are fullerenes used in?
Tennis rackets
Medicines
What is the surface area to volume like in nano particles?
There’s a huge surface area to volume ratio.
What determines the properties between plastics?
The bonds between the chains of molecules that determine properties.
What are the effects of weak forces between chains?
They are thermosoftening polymers. The plastic is east to melt.
What is a thermosoftening plastic?
One that can melt and be remoulded.
What is a thermosetting plastic?
They don’t soften when heated and stay strong hard and rigid.
What are thermosoftening structures like?
They are tangled chains that are weakly held together.
What is the structure of thermosetting polymers like?
They are a solid structure with strong intermolecular forces.
Is LDPE a thermosetting or softening plastic?
Softening
