Metallic Bonding Flashcards
What are the electrons in metals like?
They are de localised electrons
What are the properties of metals?
Good conductors of heat
Good conductors of electricity
Are able to be bent and shaped
High melting points
What is the structure of metals?
Free electrons around positive fixed ions.
Why are metals good conductors of electricity and heat?
Delocalised electrons move quickly and pass on the energy quicker
Why dob metals have high melting points?
Because there are strong forces of electrostatic attraction
Why are metals allowed to be bent and shaped?
The layers can slide over each other.
Why are alloys harder than metals?
They have different sized atoms meaning layers do not slide over each other as well.
