What is a rapid infusion catheter?

A

“RIC” line

  • Large bore catheter (7 or 8.5F) inserted into large vein centrally or peripherally
  • Used with large haemorrhage to avoid exsanguination

A
  • The large diameter allows large quantities of fluid to be administered quickly with low resistance

What preparation is a RIC line used for?

A
  • Similar to central line

- Can be inserted where an existing 20+g cannula is in situ.
