Random Tests Flashcards
What is the Shultz-Dale reaction?
A method for demonstrating anaphylactic hypersensitivity outside the body by suspending an excised intestinal loop or uterine strip from a sensitized animal in an oxygenated, physiological salt solution; addition of the proper allergen causes contraction of the smooth muscle
What is the preyer reflex?
The elicitation of startle response to auditory stimuli
What is the Galton response?
Galton attempted to measure intelligence through reaction time tests
What is the LAL (limus amebocyte lysate) test?
Known as bacterial endotoxin testing.
In vitro assay used to detect the presence and concentration of bacterial endotoxins in drugs and biological products, and is an important part of pharmaceutical microbiology.
Cons of Pyrogen testing?
Not appropriate for steroids or other medicines
Endotoxins cannot be quantified
Products that contain blood plasma have inactive form of endotoxins and won’t cause a fever
Cons of LAL testing?
Can only detect endotoxins and not other pyrogenic materials
FETAX is used to screen for what compounds?
Teratogens.
Assess mortality, malformation, and growth inhibition of developing embryos. South African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis)
What does FETAX stand for?
Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus
Montenegro tests detects which disease?
Leishmaniasis
Similar to purified protein derivative PPD used for Mycobacterium Tuberculosis
What does the Water Flea Test measure?
Toxicity test for surface of water.
Part 1: acute toxicity observing immobility and mortality
Part 2: chronic toxicity observing survival and reproduction
What does the sperm motility assay measure
Measures quality control in IVF lab. Conducted at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 24hr incubation intervals. <0.75 index value indicates sperm toxicity.
What do chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) angiogenesis assays measure?
Study angiogenesis (neovascularization), tumor cell invasion, and metastasis
Which of these is not autosomal recessive?
- Dachs chondrodystrophy
- Hypoplasia pelvis
- Osteopetrosis
- Femoral luxation
- Achondroplastic chondrodystorphy
Femoral luxation is autosomal dominant
What tear test is used in small mammals due to a small palpebral fissure?
phenol red thread tear test
75mm long cotton thread impregnated with phenol dye. Test for 15 second and measure part of thread that has changed
What test measures the aqueous fraction of the tear film?
Endodontic adsorbent paper point tear test. The wetting is measured after 1 minutes. Also suitable for small eyes or low tear production.
