Q
Abstract
A
- In an attempt to examine the behaviour and impact of mental repetition and note taking on ones ability to recall memories from long-term memory, an experimental study was conducted on 35 year 11 psychology students ages 16-17 from Saint Norbert College.
- 18 = mental rep.
- 17= note taking
- contradicted the findings of intons peterson and fornier, data was spoiled therefore can not be generalised

Q
introduction para 1
A
- memory is one of the most important processess that a human possesses.
- can be defined as the internal record of some previous event or experience.
- no memory = no learning
- can be split into three stages through atkins
- sensory, short term memory and long term
- sensory = the things around us, only attend to some and rest is forgotten
- short term = memory we are currently thinking about, attending to it allows it to continue onto long term memory
- long term memory: permanent storage of information, must be very large
3
Q
intro para 2
A
- of particular similarity within this field of study is the work of thomas and dieter (1987), which found that writing words rather than repeating words is more beneficial than just saying the words allowed
- dyer, riley, and yekovich, found that note taking, a external memory aid, and re-reading, an internal memory aid, were effective for learning information
- combination of external memory aids > internal memory aids for recalling list of words that had been seen before. intons and peterson guy
4
Q
intro para 3
A
- intention is to examine the behaviour and impact of mental repetition and note taking on ones ability to recall memories from long term memory.
- conducting this experiment, a general idea can be formed on how different forms of learning affect recall
5
Q
hypothesis
A
note taking group will recall more words compared to the mental representation group
6
Q
discussion para 1
A
the results of this experiment did not support the hypothesis, group 2 scored lower than group 1 which was not expected. use values
- the information also did not support the information predicted by inton guy. can be assumed that there is not an error in their research. - they discovered that series of external memory aids > internal memory aids, however our information does not approve of this.
7
Q
discussion part 2
A
our information = extraneous variable
- one could be lack of sleep,
- same sleep = remove the extraneous variable therefore results can not be spoiled
8
Q
discussion part 3
A
no ethical concerns
- methodological flaw = note taking group did not know their notes were being taken, therefore some may have relied on them for the recall.
- suggestion of improvement: sample size
9
Q
discussion part 4
A
investigation spoiled by extraneous variable, can not be generalised to a wider population.
- sample size is small.
- further research and more trials will need to be conducted before the results can be generalised to the population.
- infomration does not support the predictions of intons guy
