Culture
Behaviours, beliefs, attitudes and traditions that are shared by a group of people and are passed down onto one generation to the next
Attitudes
Long lasting beliefs and feelings we hold about ourselves, other people, objects and issues
- Are something we learn,
formed through personal direct experiences, interactions with others, beliefs and values of the culture we live in
- Have direction, either positive negative or neutral
- intensity: feel strongly for something or nothing at all, strength of an opinion can impact on an action occurring
- Influenced by past behaviours, memories of those experiences, and affective reactions.
Three Components of Attitudes:
Cognition: affects our thoughts and beliefs
Affect: Our feelings and emotions
Behaviour: What we Do
Individualistic Cultures
Emphasise the individual over the group
Individuals identify themselves individually rather than with group identity
Collectivist Culture
Emphasise group over individual
Groups needs are more important
Multiculturalism
Where multiple cultures live side by side
Usually a positive thing
Cultural diversity can lead to racism and prejudice
Qualitative Method
Self report - involves participants providing spoken or written answers in response to questions asked Measures attitudes In form of an open ended interview - hard to organise information - time consuming
Quantitative method
Fixed response interview
- given limited choice of answers
