have social norms
social rules, wether stated or not
social roles and social status
self concept
who we consider ourselves to be
social identity
based on our membership in particular groups
bystander effect
not doing anything whilst in a group as you assume other people will do it
more likely to do something if there are less amounts of people around
social influence
changing our behaviour in response to others
social facilitiation
performance is better when others are present
social inhibition
performing at medium arousal
simple / well learned tasks = high arousal
complex : low arousal
group polarisation
beliefs become stronger as people who have similar beliefs begin talking
conformity
changing behaviour in response to group pressure
people dislike standing out
conformity to groups = normative social influence
breaking social norms = exclusion from group
Stanford Prison Experiment
Zimbardo in 1971
- Investigated human behaviour and how would participants react when placed in a simulated prison environment
24 participants
stopped after 6 days
situation can play a large role in human behaviour
experiment was unethical
sample can not be generalised
Obedience
Stanley Milgrin 1974
conducted experiments to determine the effect that power and effect of authority and obedience has on behaviour
65% delivered max shots, many became agitated but continued anyway
Solomon Asch
Constructed a series of experiments designed to demonstrate the power of conformity in groups
- students were told they were participating in vision tests
75 participants went along with the rest of the group
participants did not want to be ridiculed, wanted to fit in
