Q

What is a normal ABPI?

A

0.9 - 1.2

According to NICE CKS:
ABPI > 1.3: This may indicate stiff or calcified arteries, which are often seen in diabetes or chronic kidney disease. Further investigation is usually recommended.

ABPI 1.0 - 1.3: This is considered normal and suggests no significant arterial disease.

ABPI 0.9 - 1.0: This range is also generally considered normal, though it may indicate borderline PAD in some cases.

ABPI 0.8 - 0.9: This suggests mild PAD.

ABPI 0.5 - 0.8: This indicates moderate PAD. Patients may experience symptoms such as claudication.

ABPI < 0.5: This is indicative of severe PAD, which may present with critical limb ischemia and requires urgent medical attention.
