What causes croup?
Parainfluenza virus
What sign is seen on CXR in croup?
Steeple sign (subglottic narrowing)
Treatment of croup?
Dexa, oxygen, nebulised adrenaline
Treatment of whooping cough?
Azithromycin (if <21 days since symptoms onset)
NOTIFIABLE DISEASE
When can return to School after whopping cough?
48* after starting ABx
What causes measles?
RNA paramyxovirus (v.v. infectious)
Prodrome of irratibility, conjunctivitis, fever and Koplik spots suggests?
Measles
Describe the rash in measles?
Rash starts behind the eats then spreads, (maculopapular rash the becomes blotchy and confluent)
Complications of measles?
Otitis media (most common)
pneumonia (most common cause of death)
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (5-10yrs)
Treatment of meningitis in <3 months?
IV amox and cefotaxime
Treatment of meningitis in >3 months
IV cefotaxime / ceftriaxone
What causes Roseola infant (sixth disease)
HHV 6
What spots are seen in roseola infantum?
Nagayama spots (uvula and soft palate)
KIDS CAN ATTEND SCHOOL.
HIGH FEVER, MACULOPAPULAR RASH, DIARRHOEA, FEBRILE CONVULSIONS
What causes erythema infectiosum? (5th disease)
Parvovirus B19 (SLAPPED CHEEK)
What do pregnant people need to do if contact with erythema infectiosum?
If <20 weeks need IgM and IgG testing as can cause hydros fetalis
What causes mumps?
RNA paramyxovirus
Symptoms of mumps?
Fever, malaise, muscular pain, parotitis.
Complications of mumps?
Orchitis, hearing loss, pancreatitis
