What is Ramsay Hunt syndrome due to?
Varicella zoster virus (VZV).
What is Ramsay hunt syndrome?
Varciella zoster of the facial nerve
What does Ramsay Hunt syndrome present as?
Unilateral lower motor neurone facial nerve palsy.
What is the main presenting feature of ramsay hunt syndrome?
Painful and tender vesicular rash in the ear canal, pinna and around the ear on the affected side.
Where can the rash in someone with ramsay hunt extend to?
The anterior two-thirds of the tongue and hard palate.
What are the main presenting features of ramsay hunt syndrome?
auricular pain is often the first feature
facial nerve palsy
vesicular rash around the ear
other features include vertigo and tinnitus
What is the main medical management of Ramsay hunt syndrome?
Prednisolone
Aciclovir
What might patients with ramsay hunt also require?
Lubricating eye drops.
