Rainforests Flashcards
1
Q
Epiphytes
A
Eg orchard, no negative effect, create own ecosystem.
2
Q
Epiphyll
A
Tiny plants which live on the surface of leaves
3
Q
Lianas
A
Use other trees to climb up into the canopy to get sunlight. May start life in canopy before sending roots to the ground. don’t grow solid trunk takes too long
4
Q
climate in rainforests
A
annual rainfall: 2500mm
average temp: 28 degrees
5
Q
soil in rainforests
A
- nutrients get washed away (leaching)
- red in colour (latosol)
6
Q
adaptations of plants
A
- drip tips: water runs off easily and prevents algae from growing and blocking sun light.
- leaves at different angles
- red leaves on young saplings prevent sun harm as it reflect light.
- butress roots: extra stability, shallow to absorb nutrients.
- thin smooth bark:prevent stuff growing on them
- some plants live on trees e.g orchids (epiphytes)
7
Q
adaptations of animals
A
- camouflage: algae grows on them, green tinge.
sloth: - eat toxic leaves: immune, beat competition
- long/sharp nails: for climbing, grip, defence.
8
Q
Location of rainforests
A
Along the equator between 20 degrees north and south (due to insolation being greatest here, air rises and condenses to form clouds), anomaly: Kenya is on the equator with no rainforest
