Lyme Regis Flashcards
Phase 1 of Lyme regis
1990-1995 = sea wall east of River Lim
2003-2004 =
• £1.4 mil to stabilise cliffs, drainage pipes in cliffs reduces water limiting freeze-thaw
• beach nourishment to change gradient of the beach creating constructive waves.
Phase 2 of Lyme regis
2005-2007 = £22 mil
• new sea wall and promenades for tourism
• extension of the rock amour at the Cobb which refracts the waves and increases deposition.
Phase 3 of Lyme regis
not done:
• prevention of landslips and erosion west of the Cobb
• cost outweighed the benefit and it provided material for the beaches.
Phase 4 of Lyme regis
2013-2015 = £20 mil
• protect from storm surges
• 390m sea wall which absorbs energy, infront of existing one,
• nailing, piling and drainage put in to stabilise cliffs and protect 480 homes.
positive outcomes
- new beaches increase tourism and Lyme regis needs £43.5 mil to justify costs of defences
- harbour better protected for boat owners and fishermen (rock armour at Cobb provide shelter).
negative outcomes
- more tourists mean more litter and congestion so the government have put in more bins and £50 fines if you leave litter.
- defences spoil landscape but sea wall was built using local sources so it blends in.
- affects neighbouring coasts east of Lyme regis.
- stabilising coast prevent fossils from being found.
