Q

Positives of CT

A
  • All around patients - get a spherical image that computer puts together to be understood
  • gold standard of acute abdominal imaging
  • quick, readily available
  • radiation dose higher, can be hindered by artefact

Q

Ultrasound physics explanation

A

• Uses high frequency sound waves to obtain images from inside the body
• Unlike CT and Plain Radiography no ionizing radiation
• Frequency higher than the human auditory limit of
20KHz
• US transducer converts electric signals into mechanical vibrations and vibrations back into electrical signals which form the picture depending on density of tissues
• If material is solid, particles are denser and so ultrasounds are reflected back, so show up as white
• If material is fluid,it transmits the sound waves so fluid comes across black (full bladder)
• Air is even stronger reflector and so you cant see anything behind it (ultrasound gel)

Q

Why does pancreatic cancer tend to lead to death?

A
  • Pancreas links to everything
  • Normally caught late
  • Enzymes can leak out of bowel e.g. into abdomen - digestive enzymes will break areas down
