radical substitution Flashcards
1
Q
chlorination
A
excess methane= chloromethane produced
excess chlorine= tetrachloromethane produced
2
Q
chlorination initiation
A
initation= generates free radicals Cl2 -light–> 2Cl
3
Q
chlorination propagation
A
involve free radical
generate new one
CH4 + Cl. –> CH3 . + HCl
CH3 . + Cl2 –> CH3Cl + Cl.
4
Q
chlorination termination
A
two free radicals form covalent bond
2CH3. –> C2H6
2Cl. –> Cl2
CH3 . + Cl. –> CH3Cl
5
Q
limitations
A
volatile process
- extremely reactive so further substitution can happen
- can produce compounds that weren’t needed
no control over point on chain where substitution happens
- gives little control on exact molecules produced
longer alkane chains may be produced- waste of reagents
