Pathological (dangerous) to the individual and society.
Dangerous to society as we won’t carry out norms and values
What does E.R. Leach say about the family?
Claims N.F.is too isolated from wider family ties e.g. grandparents
Can cause pressure, frustration and anger as no one to talk to or gain support from
Can manifest itself by parents taking out their anger on children.
What did R.D. Laing say about the family and mental health?
Family can cause mental illness
EMOTIONAL PRESSURE COOKER - each day pressure builds, release valve doesn’t get opened (isolated), will explode in arguments.
This is a result of spending too much time together, parents expectations of children are too high so become suffocating.
What did D. Cooper say?
Argues children are trained to be obedient by parents - socialised into respecting authority even if not in their own interests,
Give criticisms of radical psychiatry:
- Very negative and bleak view of NF
- Ignores positive aspects e.g. extended family support
