What is the New Right ideal family?
Traditional NF with gendered division of labour. Other family types are abnormal and inadequate.
What do New Right believe NF is?
Cornerstone of society and the natural state.
What do the new right believe the NF is under threat from?
Breakdown of traditional values - e.g. lone parents, fatherless families, divorce, homosexuality etc.
What is the New Right view on loan parents families?
Unnatural and harmful. Lack discipline, burden on welfare, lead to delinquency.
What do the New Right believe divorce and cohabitation leads to?
Family instability for adults to avoid commitment.
What is the fragmented family?
The decrease in families headed by a married couple. Leads to a lack of effectively performing functions.
List reasons for the decline in the NF
Greater tolerance of homosexual couples
Influence of feminism has devalued married, so women seek fulfilment outside of marriage.
Over-generous welfare benefits to single mothers.
What are the 2 main solutions to the problems stated by the New right?
A change in government policies - redirect welfare benefits to 2 parent families, penalise those who fail to live up to said ideal.
A return to traditional family values - A lifelong marriage between man and woman will ensure children grow up with a father figure, allowing for better socialisation.
What is being “married to the state?”
Lone parents that depend on welfare benefits to survive - benefits act as instrumental figure.
High levels of benefits act as incentive to reward irresponsible behaviour (divorce).
Women may get pregnant on purpose for money.
Give criticisms of Married to the state theory
Ignores the heroic side of single parents.
Parents may be lone because of widowing, divorce, victim of sexual abuse
What are similarities of NR and functionalists?
Both believe NF is base of society.
Both consensus believers.
Both overlook key aspects of society - dark side
Both promote gender scripts.
