Quiz1 Flashcards
what is the spinal cord reflex
information from nerves to spinal cord thorough the dorsal part,
while the info is being sent to brain for processing it also is being sent right back to nerves
what are the four categories of spinal cord from top to bottom
cervical (near neck)
thoracic (middle, upper back)
lumbar (the curve, lower back)
sarcal (bottom)
the location of spinal cord damage determines the paralysis (what nerves are damaged)
what is an epidural
needle in spine that blocks incoming pain and numbs every lower part of the body
the higher up the damage or epidural is the more of your body will be affected, because it affects that part downwards
what are cranial nerves
- cell bodies mostly in the medulla
- these nerves are typically unaffected by spinal cord damage
ex. olfactory: smell, optic: vision, auditory: hearing, vagus: internal organs, facial: face muscles
explain the coronal, horizontal/axial, mid sagittal section and lateral sagittal section of the brain
coronal: cutting your face off
horizontal/axial: cut your scalp off / Frankenstein
mid sagittal section and lateral sagittal section: cut the brain in half splitting the nose and mouth in half
what is the pons
- connection between cerebellum and brain
- some cranial nerves here
- superior olive: auditory localization
what are the Brodmann’s Areas
organization of brain areas by cellular architecture; translates roughly to function
what is an EEG
can evaluate electrical activity in the brain
-electrodes attached to brain
quadriplegia v paraplegia
paraplegia: paralysis below waist
quadriplegia: paralysis below neck
what is cerebrospinal fluid
fluid found between neurons and their bony encasements, similar composition to blood plasma
brain floats in this, ventricles contain this
what is a cerebral hemisphere
one of two physically separated halves of the cortex
grey matter v white matter in brain
grey: in brain, contains the cell bodies, dendrites and axon terminals of neurons, so it is where all synapses are
white: in brain and spinal cord, made of axons connecting different parts of grey matter to each other
